Best Vegetarian Laksa Charcoal Hotpot We Ever Had

We planned to visit New Fut Kai Vegetarian restaurant a long time ago. Finally we made time and satisfied our cravings for a good laksa hotpot. The best thing? It was a cool and rainy day which translates to the perfect weather for hotpot!

New Fut Kai vegetarian is located at Jalan Besar, they are known to serve allium free vegetarian dishes, vegan options are also available.

Food Experience

The restaurant has an extensive menu. The lady was kind to introduce some of their popular dishes to us. There were 4 of us and here’s what we ordered:

  1. Large laksa hotpot – Large
  2. Shiitake mushroom with petai – Small
  3. Xinghua noodle – Medium
Famous Laksa Charcoal Hotpot

The lady advised that the small hotpot is good for 2 person sharing while the larger hotpot is good for 3-4 person. We went with the larger ones. You’ll need to order rice or noodle separately, it is not included with the hotpot. She further suggested that we order a medium sized Xinghua noodle to eat with the laksa broth, we went for that as well.

The hotpot was served pretty quickly, probably within 10 minutes. Instantly, our table was filled with charcoal smell from the burning fire in the middle of the hotpot.

More than 20 spices and lots of goodies

According to the restaurant, over 20 spices were used to make this laksa hotpot. There were tons of goodies inside. We ate multiple types of mushrooms, tofu, green vegetables and deep fried goodies.

The restaurant also provided us an additional bowl of laksa broth to top up into the hotpot. The longer the hotpot simmers, the broth became more flavourful too. It was such a pleasurable experience.

Sambal Mushroom with Petai

We love petai. While normally cooked with sambal, this was served on a sizzling pan with deep fried shiitake mushroom and assam. This is our first time eating a non-spicy petai dish. Quite refreshing! More petai in the dish please, just like any petai lover would say. 😂

Xinghua Noodle with Laksa Broth

As for the Xinghua noodle, we ate it with the laksa broth. The laksa flavour was so powerful that we can’t really remember how did the original noodle taste like.

Closing Thought 💭 – 👍👍👍👍

We love the laksa hotpot, will most definitely come back again with more friends. This is a restaurant that even non-vegetarian folks would enjoy.
