Eat Like a Local at Makan Kitchen Doubletree Hilton JB

This article is part of the DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru Review series:

As we approached the Makan Kitchen with a sleepy face, a lady greeted us with a lovely smile and seated us at a small section of the restaurant. It felt pretty private.

She offered us tea and coffee, we opted for black coffee. A reserved sign was also put on our table, similar to what DoubleTree Kuala Lumpur did during breakfast service.

This restaurant was huge! Offering a variety of choices for guests. Food was divided by section or corner such as Chinese, Indian and Malay corner to name a few.

I’ll let the photos to do all the talking.

Chinese Corner

At the Chinese section, fried rice or noodle were available upon request. Halal (Non Pork) Dim Sum were served too.

There were about 3 type of congee which one could choose from. Peanut and some preserved vegetables are commonly mixed with the congee. This is the typical breakfast for South East Asia.

Noodle Corner

I like the look of the noodle station with a big pot of boiling water.  You could cook your own noodle or have the staff to cook one for you.

If you are not interested to have a Chinese breakfast, there is Kari Laksa or Mee Soto for you too. I would personally go for Kari Laksa.

International Corner

The standard selection from salad, cheese and meat to corn flakes for kids were offered here. I notice that the local enjoys this section particularly together with some Westerners who were looking to eat food that they are familiar with.

Pastry and Ice Cream Corner

I cant believe that there is a ice cream or yogurt machine here in this restaurant, several kids were seen frequenting this particular machine and we all know why.

Fresh bread with a variety of bread spread were also available. Croissant was soft and not too oily.

Local kuih-muih or pastries were served here too. We tried the green color pastry with a bit of coconut flakes on top. It tasted sweet and I was told it is a type of Indian pastry.

We also tasted some tapioca chips before leaving the breakfast area.

Malay Corner & Indian Corner

Both of these are my favorite corners. Nasi Lemak is my must try dish whenever I am visiting Malaysia.I liked that there was a board explaining what Nasi Lemak is to tourists visiting the country and I learned on this trip that the Nasi Lemak is called Rice in Cream in English.
