💡 Quick Verdict

From now on if I am booking flights on Scoot, I will follow this every single time:

Always check one-way pricing—and always compare with Online Travel Agents (OTAs).

On routes like Singapore to Tokyo, it can easily save you $100–$150+ per ticket.

  • 💰 Cheapest Method:
    • OTA Trip.com even without coupons
    • Book direct with Scoot but two one way ticket instead of round trip
  • Biggest Mistake: Booking first round-trip price you see
  • 🎯 Key Strategy: Compare 3 ways (Roundtrip vs 2 One Way vs OTA)

✈️ My Case Study

We recently took a trip from Singapore to Osaka with Scoot and was very satisfied with the no frills flight as a family. We are totally fine to fly with Scoot.

  • Route: Singapore → Tokyo (Narita/Haneda)
  • Airline: Scoot
  • Booking window: 5 months in advance
  • Typical round-trip price: ~$520 (before optimisation with 20kg baggage each way)

🔍 What Most People Do

Most travellers:

  • Search round-trip
  • See a “reasonable” price
  • Book immediately

Looks fine—but this is where people overpay.

🧠 Step 1: Check Round Trip Pricing

FlightEconomyScootPlus
TR 882 SIN-HND$267.20$562.20
TR885 NRT-SIN$275.49$530.49
Total$542.69$1,092.69

Note that price excludes baggage and credit card transaction fees

Tokyo-Singapore fare looks reasonable, most will just go ahead and seal the deal

🧠 Step 2: Check One Way Pricing

Break the trip into two separate tickets:

FlightEconomyScootPlus
TR 882 SIN-HND$267.20$562.20
TR885 NRT-SIN$195.50 (30% savings)$373.40 (30% savings)
Total$462.70$935.60

SIN-HND price is the same as round trip for both economy and ScootPlus but NRT-SIN leg is $79.99 cheaper in Economy and $157.00 cheaper in ScootPlus per ticket.

Scoot Direct: One Way Tokyo to Singapore

Price for both economy an ScootPlus are significantly cheaper by 30% per ticket. Imagine the savings if you were to book 4 tickets!

Tokyo to Singapore price is way cheaper per ticket

🧠 Step 3: Check Online Travel Agent (OTA)

Upon checking Trip.com, the flight from SIN-HND is $54.30 more expensive then Scoot official website, the NRT-SIN flight is $0.10 more.

The NRT-SIN flight is actually cheaper because we have not factor in Scoot’s credit card transaction fees while Trip.com is showing the final price.

FlightEconomy
TR 882 SIN-HND$321.50
TR885 NRT-SIN$195.60
Total$517.10

Exploring Japan like me? Make sure you check pricing at Trip.com during your research.

Lesson: Scoot pricing is uneven. Never assume. Trip.com is cheaper even before applying any promotional coupon! The proves that booking one way, even using OTA is cheaper then booking a roundtrip ticket

💳 Fees & Pricing Traps

Booking Direct with Scoot

  • Payment processing fees will apply for both legs if you choose to pay via Credit Card.
  • Everything is unbundled (bags, seats, meals)

Why OTAs can be cheaper sometimes:

  • Coupons / app-only discounts
  • Aggressive Asia pricing strategy
  • Slight fare bucket differences
  • Baked in credit card transaction fees
  • Beware of payment fees at checkout

🧳 Real Price with Baggage

At Trip.com, the 20kg check in baggage price is surprisingly similar to Scoot’s official booking price. Baggage prices are very reasonable via an OTA.

👉 This makes it very attractive to book OTA for short and direct flight like this.

✈️ KrisFlyer Miles on Scoot

You can earn KrisFlyer miles when flying Scoot. Earning is low but every miles count! You will also earn miles via OTA booking as long as the fare type are eligible for miles accrual. Treat this as a bonus—not a deciding factor

  • Add your KrisFlyer number during booking
  • Miles earned depend on fare type

Scoot Japan Case Study Wrap

Is it clear that booking 2 one way tickets are cheaper than a round trip at $432.70. Even after 2.8% payment fee that lands us at $475.20, it is still cheaper than a round trip ticket. Again, imagine the savings if you were to book 3 or 4 tickets!

FlightRound Trip2 x One WayTrip.com OTA
TR 882 SIN-HND$267.20$267.20$321.50
TR885 NRT-SIN$275.49$195.50$195.60
Total$542.69$462.70$517.10

🔁 My Booking Strategy

  1. Check Scoot round-trip price
  2. Split into 2 × one-way
  3. Check OTA (Trip.com)
  4. Compare final price (with baggage + fees)
  5. Choose cheapest OR most flexible option

⚠️ When I Book Direct Instead

  • Price difference is small ($30 range)
  • I may need to change flights
  • I want easier customer support

🏁 Final Verdict

Scoot pricing is not intuitive and that’s where the opportunity is. Always compare final payable price—not headline fare

  • Don’t assume round-trip is cheapest
  • Don’t assume direct booking is cheapest
  • Always compare one-way + OTA + final fees

Tip: This strategy works not just for Tokyo—but also Seoul, Taipei, and Bangkok routes.

If you’re not comparing all three, you’re probably overpaying.
