We were excited for our Japan trip, with plenty of adventures planned ahead. We booked our tickets at the beginning of 2023, hoping that Japan would be fully reopened with minimal or no COVID-related restrictions by the time we travelled—and thankfully, it worked out.
By June 2023, entry into Japan had returned to a normal process. We were only required to complete an immigration form and a customs declaration form, both of which were distributed during the flight.
For this trip, we flew Scoot into Kansai Airport. Flight TR818 departs Singapore at 6:15am and arrives in Osaka (Kansai) at around 1:45pm, giving us enough time to continue our journey to Kyoto via an express train.
✈️ Flight Overview
- Airline: Scoot
- Route: Singapore (SIN) → Osaka Kansai (KIX)
- Aircraft: Boeing 787 Dreamliner
- Flight number: TR818
- Duration: ~6–7 hours
🛫 Check-in Experience
We initially tried using the self check-in machines, but were directed to the counter—likely due to document verification requirements. We also attempted online check-in to avoid queues, but the website was slow to load and not very responsive.
In the end, we checked in at the counter and dropped off our bags there. The entire process took around 30 minutes, and it would likely take longer without priority access.
Compared to my experience with AirAsia, Scoot still has room to improve in this area.

🎟️ Boarding Experience
Boarding was smooth and efficient, with most passengers eager to get onboard—especially with a slight delay to the flight. The process moved quickly, and it didn’t take long to settle into the cabin.
One thing I appreciated was the ample overhead storage space, which made it easier to store carry-on luggage without stress. Scoot also offers a 10kg carry-on allowance, which is more generous compared to many airlines that typically allow only 7kg. A small but practical advantage, especially if you’re travelling light.
🪑 Seat & Cabin Experience
Scoot operates the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on this route in a 3-3-3 configuration.
- Decent legroom for a budget airline
- Seat cushioning is acceptable
- No built-in inflight entertainment
For a 6+ hour flight, it’s manageable—but not particularly comfortable.

🍽️ Food (Vegetarian Experience)
We didn’t pre-order meals for this flight, there were very limited options for vegetarian main meal. Food choices were extremely limited Thankfully, the crew were fine with us bringing our own snacks, which helped.
If you’re a vegetarian, I highly recommend bringing your own food. Additionally, please be considerate about the type of food you bring.

🚻 Cleanliness & Cabin Condition
One pleasant surprise was the cleanliness of the aircraft.
- Lavatories were well maintained
- Cabin remained clean throughout the flight
This made the overall experience more comfortable.
😊 Service
The cabin crew were:
- Friendly
- Professional
- Attentive
While service is naturally limited on a budget airline, the crew maintained a positive and welcoming attitude.

Unfortunately the placement of the service button, a design flaw, caused a lot of unnecessary approach of the crews.

🚄 Getting from Kansai Airport to Kyoto
After landing at Kansai Airport, you’ll need to get into the city.
👉 The easiest way is the Haruka Express. Fast, direct, and much less confusing than buying tickets at the station.
👉 Avoid expensive roaming charges. Get your eSIM before landing via Klook. I prefer NTT Docomo or Softbank
🧠 Final Thoughts
This was a smooth and uneventful flight.
Scoot delivers exactly what it promises:
- Affordable fares
- No-frills experience
- Reliable point-to-point travel
Would I take Scoot again? Yes—if the price difference is significant.
