Comforting Vegetarian Zi Char at Shu Vegetarian

Sometimes all you want is a proper comforting Chinese meal with a few dishes to share, hot rice, and rich gravy to pour over everything. That was exactly this dinner at Shu Fang Zhai.
We ordered a mix of classic vegetarian zi char dishes, and honestly, every dish felt hearty and satisfying rather than “just vegetarian”.
Asam Fish

This was probably the star of the meal. The gravy was thick, spicy, tangy, and incredibly addictive with rice. The mock fish had a surprisingly good texture and absorbed the sauce really well. Lots of vegetables inside too, which made it feel less heavy.
Hot Plate Beancurd (Spicy)

Served sizzling hot with rich brown sauce. Soft tofu, vegetables, and a spicy savoury gravy that worked perfectly with white rice. Very comforting dish.
3 Yolks with Chinese Spinach

A classic dish done nicely. The spinach was fresh and soft, while the three-egg combination gave the soup a creamy texture with lots of flavour.
Claypot Vinegar Veg Meat

This one was interesting. Dark vinegar broth with vegetarian meat pieces simmered in a claypot. Rich, herbal, slightly sweet and sour at the same time. Definitely one of those dishes that tastes even better after soaking into rice.
Fried Oyster Omelette

Vegetarian version of oyster omelette. Crispy edges with soft egg texture inside. Not exactly the same as the original, but still enjoyable on its own.
Final Thoughts
For a full vegetarian zi char spread, the portion sizes were decent and filling. What I liked most was that the dishes felt comforting and familiar rather than trying too hard to imitate meat. Strong flavours, good wok hei, rich sauces, and perfect for sharing with family or friends.
Definitely one of those places I would return to when craving vegetarian zi char around Jalan Kayu.
