In addition to recent announcement of peak and non peak redemption pricing, World of Hyatt announced their first points sales in 2020.
The sale this time is different as it offers 25% off the regular pricing instead of the usual 40% bonus points when you pay for the regular price for points.

Award stay or pay cash?
The deciding factors for me when buying additional points are as follow:
- Points redemption price is cheaper than the actual room rate offered
- Partial top up is needed to redeem an upcoming stay
- Points activity needed to extend current points validity
A quick and dirty way to figure this out is to compare which the price of the hotel’s room rate and the amount you’ll pay if you buy points to redeem the stay.
Points Price by Room Category
- Category 1 – 5000 points – USD 90.00
- Category 2 – 8000 points – USD 144.00
- Category 3 – 12000 points – USD 216.00
- Category 4 – 15000 points – USD 270.00
- Category 5 – 20000 points – USD 360.00
- Category 6 – 25000 points – USD 450.00
Tip: If you are paying for the points via a non-US credit card, remember to add around 3.25% for currency conversion fee into your cost.
Bottom Line
A quick comparison seems to reflect that it is a fair deal for certain hotels. For example, there are days where Hyatt Regency Bali (Cat 2) costs around USD144 per night after tax. However, I’ve never pay more that USD 216 per night for Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur (Cat 3).
I am expecting such sale to happen again and wouldn’t suggest buying the discount points unless you have plan to stay in near future.
